ALL the suggested activities listed below, and found in the Scat's My Bag learning cd/books jazz pack, teach STATE STANDARDS!
For classroom teachers, here's a list of class activity suggestions to get the most out of a lesson using any or all of the songs found on the "Scat's My Bag" interactive learning cd.
CLASSROOM ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS:
1. LISTEN to the mp3 sample, Clarinet Claire.
2. Open floor for brief discussion on what students hear. (Style, tempo, mood, instruments, vocals, story/message etc...)
3. For K-3rd grades, tap clap or stomp on "jazz beats" 2 & 4, make up dance movements or march around the room on "jazz beats" 2 & 4, sing "call and response" along with the children on the recording. Have half of the class sing the "call" and the other half of the class sing the "response". Then switch parts.
4. Discuss storybook lyrics. Do you know someone who plays the clarinet or other instruments? Are they in a band? What can you tell us about Claire as a person, socially or as a student? What kind of problem-solving skills are involved? How would this help with other subjects?
5. Use favorite coloring tools to color in the character in the storybook. Then have students create their own drawing of Claire or what the music inspires them to draw on the storybook blank pages.
6. For grades 4-8th, add activities for singers and instrumentalists to use the songbook leadsheet to play along with the recording. Singers can sing the "call" and instrumentalists can play the "response" for example and then switch roles.
7. Singers can try to "scat" their own improvised melodies, instrumentalists and percussionists can create their own improvisations along with the recording using notes and rhythms of the song or by using simple 2 and 3 note scales like, "G-A-Bb" or "G-Bb-C", using "jazz scat" syllables like "bah-dah", "doo-bee" or "doo-bah" or by choosing any combination from the notes of the G blues scale "G-Bb-C-C#-D-F-G" and simple rhythms like a dotted quarter note to an eighth note, quarter notes accenting "jazz beats" 2 & 4 or consecutive eighth notes accenting the offbeat "ands" for example "1-AND-2-AND-3-AND-4-AND" etc...
8. Ask students to break into smaller groups to practice their "creations" and then perform for each other.
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO E-MAIL MISS ERIKA WITH ANY QUESTIONS. WE'RE HERE TO HELP GUIDE YOU IF AND WHEN YOU NEED IT!
AND PLEASE SHARE WITH US WHAT YOU DISCOVERED AND HOW IT INFLUENCED YOUR STUDENTS.
IT'S IMPORTANT TO US TO BE PART OF MAKING A POSITIVE, CREATIVE DIFFERENCE IN OUR CHILDREN'S EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE!
